Ian Macfarlane was first elected to federal parliament in 1998; he brings extensive experience and pragmatic approach to policy work in two of Australia’s most important industries.
As a Minister in the Howard Government, Ian held the portfolio of Small Business (2001) before being promoted to the Cabinet role of Industry, Tourism and Resources (2001-2007). He has also previously been the Coalition’s spokesperson for Trade and for Infrastructure and Water.
Before entering federal politics Ian farmed peanuts, sorghum and wheat and ran cattle in Queensland’s Burnett region before becoming one of the country’s most active agripoliticians.
Ian is married to Karen with two daughters. He lives in Toowoomba, Australia’s largest provincial inland city.

Justin Smirk is a Senior Economist with Westpac’s Economic Research team and has 18 years experience in Australia’s financial markets.
He has spent time in Westpac’s London office as Senior International Economist and had a twelve month secondment as Chief Economist at St.George Bank.

Kent Hoots was appointed Senior Vice President of Global Products in January 2013 in addition to his responsibilities of Global Supply Chain and IT, which he took over in July of 2012. He joined Boart Longyear in April 2007 as Vice President – Asia Pacific located in Adelaide, Australia.
Before joining Boart Longyear, Mr Hoots was employed by General Electric for over twenty years where he held various positions of increasing responsibility in both the Aviation and Energy divisions.

Michael Roche is Director Economic and Infrastructure Policy of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC), the peak representative body for minerals and energy companies in Queensland.

Professor Ian Plimer BSc (Hons), PhD, FTSE, FGS, FAIMM is Emeritus Professor at the University of Melbourne where he was Professor and Head (1991-2005).
He currently serves as an independent non-executive director on the boards of listed companies Silver City Minerals Ltd, Niuminco Group Ltd, Kefi Minerals plc and unlisted Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd companies (Roy Hill Holdings, Hope Downs, Queensland Coal Investments).

Glenn has over twenty years’ experience in the employment, education and training industry having worked as a senior executive in both the public and private sectors across Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.

Coiled tubing (CT) drilling was developed for well interventions in the petroleum industry. The major advantage of CT drilling is the absence of drill rods and thus improved safety. This talk will discuss Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre’s (DET CRC) progress towards to developing a CT rig for mineral exploration.
Soren has held various Project, Engineering and Executive leadership positions since completing his Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1991. He has worked extensively with leading the development of onshore drilling rigs for mineral exploration, production holes, geotechnical applications and coiled tubing rigs for the oil and gas industry.
During his career Soren has expatriated to China, The Netherlands and Poland with such companies as Knebel Drilling A/S, Boart Longyear and A.P.Moller Maersk.
